We assess the potential of a site to support great crested newts (other UK amphibians are protected by policy only except for natterjack toads and it is believed all populations of these are already known).

• Habitat Suitability Index ‘calculations’.

• Rapid Risk Assessments.

• eDNA testing.

• Presence/likely absence surveys (torchlight, bottle ‘traps’, netting and egg searches).

Mitigation may include avoidance of impacts, district licensing, habitat creation, licensed translocation and habitat destruction.
